The League of Gentlemen: Season Review 21st: 'METAL' MARC FARQUHAR
"FARCSELONA" A woeful season from Metal Marc, who only managed his team seven times throughout the season. On five of those occasions, his decisions led to an immediate red arrow. Metal Marc's absentee management has long been doomed to failure; the only surprise is that this is his first Wooden Spoon. Final Overall Ranking: 5,659,232 Final Points Total: 1654 Highest-Ever Overall Ranking: 311,266 (2007-08) Highest-Ever Points Total: 1921 (2007-08) Final Team Value: £96.7m Triple Captain Score: 15 points (Sterling; GW 9) Bench Boost Score: 7 points (GW 37) Free Hit Score: 54 (GW 17) Total Transfers Made: 9 Total Hits Taken: 3 (-12 points) Points on Bench: 250 Top Gameweek Rank: 46,962 (GW 9) Best No-Chip Gameweek: 69 points (GW 19) Worst Gameweek: 20 points (GW 12) 20th: 'MAD' MIKEY PATERSON "SUICIDE SQUAD" It started off so well for Mikey P, who finished Gameweek Four in second position. The problem came in Gameweek Five, when he used his Free Hit and became addicted to making mass changes. The heavy rotation of players meant he missed as many big scores as he secured; the hit points accrued meant his team were always slipping further away - not least in Gameweek Nine, when Mad Mikey scored the first-ever minus-points gameweek score in League of Gentlemen history. A late rally in the final four weeks saw him climb off the bottom and secure some good scores, mirroring that of his first four gameweeks. If he can control himself during the middle thirty weeks next time out, he should finish much higher in the table. Very lucky not to finish bottom, though that in itself is an achievement after entering Gameweek Three with only 25 points on the board. Hard to know if he'll return next season, or if there is any point in him doing so; the passion is just not there and set-forget teams always fail in the League of Gentlemen. Whatever happens next for Tits Up Thompson, he'll always have the memory of his massive upset victory over Hitman Hodgson in the Gentlemen's Trophy. That was only averted this season after a rare foray into the market to bring in Lundstram, and the decision to captain Ings, two decisions which helped secure him a higher finish than usual. A good run in the Gentlemen's Trophy showed that the potential is there, but unless he can find a way to engage with the competition, he'll be right back at the bottom next season. The highlight of his season was beating the Ox in the Gentlemen's Trophy; his failure to return after the three-month break meant that was as good as it got. Jie has the potential, with a top-59k finish in 2013-14 meaning he is one of the rare few Gentlemen to break into the top 100k. Whether he has the inclination to get back to those heady heights is the question, one that only Jie can answer. When he ended Gameweek Two ranked just outside the top 250k, it looked like he might just back those boasts up. Unfortunately for him, his season ended up the equivalent of Teemu Pukki - an explosive start that faded out to a forgotten whimper. Abandoning his team in Gameweek 24 after a series of red arrows, the Iceman tried to give the illusion of nonchalance, as if the game was beneath him and he didn't care, though it was easily seen-through. With Leeds United back in the Premier League next season, he might find himself with an early advantage. Until his temperament matures, however, he will continue to struggle over the marathon of the 38 gameweeks. Improved as the season went on, the highlight being when he became the first of only two managers to reach the Hundred Club, without the use of a chip or it being a double-gameweek. A late rally saw him finish inside the top 1.9m, a massive improvement from the 4.14m ranking he found himself in after Gameweek 16. With a year's experience under his belt and with him now understanding the nuances of the game better, next season promises to be a much better campaign. In Gameweek Three he slipped out of the top-1m players, a position he couldn’t regain over the rest of the season. After slipping to 3.02m in Gameweek Fifteen, Slick Rick found his footing and started climbing the rankings again, eventually finishing inside the top 1.76m. His form was intrinsically linked with that of his beloved Spurs; his near-permanent holding of three of their assets meaning he rose and fell as they did, with the injury to Kane hitting both hard. His excellent chip use this season and a rise of 500k following the restart shows the threat Slick Rick poses when Spurs are firing; if Kane stays fit and Mourinho recaptures his former glory, the Tiptoppers could be much nearer the top next time out. A solid debut season in FPL. It was a disappointing season for Oxsmorons after breaking into the top-1m last time out. A very promising start saw him in the top-525k after four gameweeks, before a disastrous Gameweek Five dropped him almost 1.3m places. Devastating drops were The Ox’s undoing this campaign; a Gameweek Twelve fall of just under a million places, a Gameweek Fifteen drop of 934k and a fall of over 400k from Gameweek 26 to 28 undermining some otherwise-promising work. A late rally saw him finish just outside the top 1.5m, but The Ox knows he can do better, having bested that score five times in his FPL career. Finishing runner-up in the LoG Cup was a bright spot, as was his getting the joint-highest Triple Captaincy, though these glimmers of light will not abate the darkness during The Ox’s summer months, and he will return with a point to prove next season. Rallied from an overall rank of over 2m in Gameweek Four to climb up to 212k in Gameweek Seven, but an almost-uninterrupted run of red arrows until Gameweek 26 followed, leaving Who Horner stranded at 2.7m. He recovered well after that, using the unlimited free transfers in Gameweek 30 to reshape his squad and push on, eventually managing to half his overall ranking in the last twelve weeks. Having only taken one transfer hit in two seasons, it is so important for Who Horner to get his early selections correct. Get his squad wrong in pre-season and he can expect another season of struggle. Get it right, however, and he will be a challenge for everyone next time out. A terrible start saw him ranked at nearly 3m after five gameweeks, ending any hope of pushing on from last season. A Gameweek Nine Wildcard following a mid-season camp in Bali led to four red arrows in five gameweeks, pushing him up to a season-high 772k and giving an element of hope. It was a steady decline after that, however, leaving him embroiled in a battle for a top-ten finish that he ultimately lost. Though a disappointing campaign, the massive improvement from 2017/18 to 2018/19 cannot be forgotten. If Flash can avoid the pressure getting to him and re-find the magic that saw that near-1m rise in the overall rankings, next season could be the one where he finally fulfils his undoubted potential. PKG FC hovered around that mark for the rest of the season, staying within 300k of that ranking with the exception of two gameweeks before finishing just outside the top 838k and just inside the top ten of the League of Gentlemen. His history in the game is one of inconsistency; his best finish being 578k in 2017, before finishing 3.1m two years later. The Magician of Mauritius could do anything next season; he could push on and challenge towards the top, or he could be fighting it out in the Also-Rans. Either way, we know he’ll be there, despite knowing nobody else in the league and nobody knowing how he managed to join it. It was a slow start to the season for Big-Time, before his Gameweek Thirteen Wildcard launched him into the top-531k. Following that peak, however, he continued to struggle for momentum, with even an early second Wildcard failing to propel him up the rankings. It all clicked in Gameweek 24, with a solid score of 62 the trigger for a run of five green arrows in eight gameweeks. The enforced break punished Big-Time hard; despite returning with another green arrow, it was followed with four consecutive reds, before two 97 scores in three gameweeks fired him nearly 800k up the rankings. A woeful final week of 49 points left him in ninth position, and that inconsistency is the crux of Big-Time’s issues. He clearly has the ability to threaten at the upper-end of the table; showcasing that ability throughout the 38 gameweeks is the key. If he can get that initial team selection right and eliminate the early weeks of catch-up, he will find himself higher in the table next time. RECTION XI" A strong debut season in the League of Gentlemen for FPL veteran Masterchef, who posted his personal best overall ranking after an absence from the game of four years. When he stepped away from FPL last time, it was following an overall ranking of 2.83m, a full 2m lower than his debut season score in 2010/11. With many questioning whether he could recapture the glory of nine years ago following five seasons of decline and four years away, the Masterchef provided the answers in scintillating fashion. Having spent most of the season inside the top five of the League of Gentlemen, he faded away towards the end, which is perhaps to be expected as he re-educated himself in the intricacies of the game. He finished the season in style with the highest gameweek score in the division, crashing into the Hundred Club on the Final Day and becoming only the second Gentleman to do so chipless on a Single Gameweek. Back in the swing of things and with a fuller understanding of how the game works, the Masterchef will be a force to be reckoned with next time out. It gave him a strong start to the season, but a disastrous Gameweek Three Wildcard resulted in six red arrows in eight weeks, resulting in a season-low overall ranking of 2.83m in Gameweek Ten. Something clicked for All-Star after that, and he only saw nine red arrows in the final 28 weeks of the season, including ending the campaign with eleven green arrows in thirteen gameweeks. That finish to the campaign shows that Vogt could be a real threat next time out, but a declaration of retirement after failing to best Lord Geord on the final day leaves his potential participation up in the air. That, in a nutshell, is the key to understanding All-Star Vogt; he sets his own targets, and he isn’t above mind games to achieve his goals. If he fails in them, however, he feels the weight of defeat heavy. Should he return, and perform in the opening ten gameweeks in the same style he finished this season, he could be the dark horse to challenge King Ding at the top of the league. Having reversed his decision to retire at the end of last season, he entered this campaign chronicling it all, believing his journals would be the key to him finally putting the pieces of the puzzle together and walking out as champion. The team name he chose, Lawezarus Rising, was meant to symbolise his rebirth as an FPL Master. That all fell away inside ten gameweeks, as forty points worth of hits left him suffering red arrow after red arrow and plummeting to an overall ranking of 4.03m. His title dream over, he reverted to his traditional team name of Geord’s Lords, threw away all his romantic notions of glory, knuckled down and got to work. Three huge gameweeks immediately followed, launching him 2.5m up in the rankings. Steady performance followed until his early second Wildcard in Gameweek 27; eleven green arrows in twelve gameweeks followed, leading to his highest-ever overall ranking by some distance. Despite the heartbreak of a Gentlemen’s Trophy semi-final defeat courtesy of one of the worst VAR decisions of the season, Lord Geord should be very proud of how he rose from 4.03m to finish just outside the top 250k. If he can avoid the early-season chaos that surrounded his team this season, avoid so many hits and keep up his scintillating season-ending form, maybe, just maybe, his dream of being the League of Gentlemen champion could finally become a reality. Another FPL veteran making his debut in the League of Gentlemen, much was expected of Hitman Hodgson. Declared the dark horse for a title push by the bookies, the Hitman took that mantle and ran with it, responding to a poor opening gameweek with five green arrows in six gameweeks. Disaster befell him in Gameweek Eight, however; a score of just 26 points leading to three red arrows in four gameweeks and a drop to 2.62m in the overall rankings. After rebounding with a huge 90 points in Gameweek Thirteen – the third-highest gameweek ranking of any Gentleman this season - it was a near-constant rise up the table, peaking with a huge score of 120 in Gameweek 30. The 84 points that followed the week after left him on the brink of the top 100k, but a poor finish of five red arrows in seven and a disastrous 56 points on the Final Day saw him slip from the bronze medal position to fifth at the last. Nevertheless, it remained the greatest season of the Hitman’s FPL career, recording his personal best overall ranking just outside the top-200k. He won’t be the dark horse next time out, because everyone is well aware of his ability now. Tighten up them loose gameweeks, and both the title and the top-100k are within his reach. Inexperience showed in the opening weeks, with a Gameweek Two ranking of 159k falling to 2.66m by Gameweek Seven. Showing remarkable adaptability, he grasped the game quicker than most and broke back into the top 758k by Gameweek Nineteen; after that, he never left the top-1m all season. Denied a place in the Gentlemen’s Trophy final by two appalling VAR decisions, a woeful miss in stoppage time from Rashford and the honourable approach of refusing to use his Bench Boost, Deadly Daz took a week away from the game, before returning strongly and obliterating the Hitman on the Final Day. He was only denied the bronze medal by virtue of Jockin’ Jeeves receiving the Liverpool team news early on the Final Day, something Deadly Daz was not privy to; between VAR and team leaks only certain people could access, Deadly Daz has every reason to feel a little cheated at how he missed out on silverware. Deadly Daz should also feel incredibly proud at how he has acquitted himself this season. So many managers go their entire careers without touching the top-200k; Deadly Daz has smashed his way into it with style and grace. With a year’s experience under his belt, Deadly Daz is the man to watch next season – the sky is the limit. Final Overall Ranking: 177,398 Final Points Total: 2234 Highest-Ever Overall Ranking: 117,398 (2019-20) Highest-Ever Points Total: 2234 (2019-20) Final Team Value: £106.8m Triple Captain Score: 6 points (Mane, GW 6) Bench Boost Score: 4 points (GW 38) Free Hit Score: 41 points (GW 21) Total Transfers Made: 76 Total Hits Taken: 21 (-84 points) Points on Bench: 182 Top Gameweek Rank: 31,507 (GW 32) Best No-Chip Gameweek: 98 points (GW 32) Worst Gameweek: 31 points (GW 4) 3rd: JAMIE 'JOCKIN' JEEVES' AYERS "THE JUGGERNAUTS" A season of frustration for the two-time League of Gentlemen champion, who began the campaign determined to equal King Ding’s three title reigns and threw it away with a disastrous Wildcard in Gameweek Three. Five red arrows in seven gameweeks followed, leaving him adrift of Big Steve at the top and with a mountain to climb. By Gameweek Seventeen Jockin’ Jeeves had rebounded and was ranked at 82.6k; the problem for the Juggernauts was that Big Steve was ranked 8,011 in the world. A Gameweek Eighteen hit to try and bridge the gap led to five red arrows in six gameweeks and the end of the title dream. His second Wildcard proved equally as disastrous as the first, leading to seven red arrows in ten gameweeks. Yet, such had been the ability shown amid the carnage, Jeeves was just outside the top-170k going into the final week. With the advantage of the early team news, Jeeves was able to pip Deadly Daz to the bronze medal, yet third place and winning the LoG Cup will mean little to a man of such high standards. The one thing he will take away from this season is that he achieved his personal best overall-ranking; yet even that will bring little comfort, knowing King Ding has bested that score four times in his FPL career and now has double the League of Gentlemen championships. If he can turn his Wildcards from disasters to successes, Jeeves will be right back in the mix next season. Anything less than the title will be seen as failure. Final Overall Ranking: 152,492 Final Points Total: 2243 Highest-Ever Overall Ranking: 152,492 (2019-20) Highest-Ever Points Total: 2243 (2019-20) Final Team Value: £106.1m Triple Captain Score: 48 points (Salah, GW 24) Bench Boost Score: 19 points (GW 29) Free Hit Score: 83 points (GW 30) Total Transfers Made: 60 Total Hits Taken: 23 (-92 points) Points on Bench: 210 Top Gameweek Rank: 37,770 (GW 29) Best No-Chip Gameweek: 86 points (GW 34) Worst Gameweek: 18 points (GW 28) 2nd: BIG STEVE 'THE BUTCHER' ALLISON "DUMB AND DUMMETT" He may not have won the title, but Big Steve is going down in legend for this season. Producing an FPL performance the equivalent of Kevin Keegan’s famous Newcastle United team, The Butcher started in scintillating fashion, ascending to the top of the table in Gameweek Four and only falling in the final, devastating gameweek. What a season it was, though. From the incredible achievement of being ranked 516 in the world in Gameweek Six – the highest ever achieved by a Gentleman – to spending 22 of 38 gameweeks inside the top-10k, Big Steve has led us on a journey that will be remembered forever, perhaps even more so due to the heart-breaking finale. Three red arrows in the final four gameweeks denied him the Gentlemen’s Trophy, the League championship and the top-10k finish he deserved, meaning he will be remembered for having ‘only’ the second-greatest season in League of Gentlemen history. Much like Kevin Keegan, however, there is no shame in being beaten at the last by the greatest of all time; not least when you have provided inspiration, fascination, joy and delight to so many, when all your rivals have upped their game, and when you have dragged everyone up alongside you. Big Steve’s ability, his unprecedented performance this season, forced everyone to be better; he is the reason every member of the top nine achieved a personal best overall ranking. He is the People’s Champ; it would only be fitting if he can go one better next year and claim the crown he so richly deserves. The League of Gentlemen champion for the fourth time, the first man to ever win it back-to-back, the inaugural Gentlemen’s Trophy winner, four-time Manager of the Month and the first Gentleman to ever finish inside the top-10k, doing it all without taking a single hit in the transfer market. It was the quintessential FPL performance, using the platform of the highest-profile League of Gentlemen season ever to show his competitors how the game should be played, and proving to them all why you should always keep fighting to the last. From 119 points behind to 27 points ahead, that 146-point swing will linger long in the memory of every Gentleman next season; when they are struggling to keep pace, they will remember the King’s performance and feel their strength and resolve renewed. With so many worlds conquered, there is one final frontier for the King: to finish number one in the world. If he doesn’t make such a hash of his opening eight gameweeks next season, he will give that challenge one hell of a go. Should he slip, though, the field behind him has never been stronger, never been hungrier, and they will be waiting to pounce. The King, however, has proven himself more than equipped for any challenge. A simply stunning season from King Ding, a worthy champion, and officially the greatest Gentleman of all time.
